Winter Park is a pretty suburb 7 miles north of Orlando with cute shops, lovely residential streets, and beautiful parks and lakes. There are also a few museums that are real gems and a Scenic Boat Tour to enjoy.

Among those lovely outdoor spaces is Kraft Azalea Garden, a small public garden tucked away on the shores of Lake Maitland and famed for its azaleas. The Banyan Tree

Often called “Winter Park’s Secret Garden,” this lakefront park is a serene escape with towering cypress trees, scenic lake views, and brilliant azaleas. This 5.22-acre public garden also boasts a unique urban great egret rookery and is home to the largest banyan tree you’ll find north of Miami.

Take a stroll in this lakeside garden and look up, to see the impressive trees draped with Spanish moss. The cypress trees are a highlight, but the park is also home to a Greek-style exedra (semicircular monument) and a dock. The park is popular for weddings and other events.

The best time to visit Kraft Azalea Garden is in spring and summer when the gardens are a blaze of color. But don’t miss sunset sketches at the gnarly old banyan, where its light-colored bark lights up with an orange glow as the sun slips behind luxury mansions on the shore of Lake Maitland. The twisted intertwining forms make for fascinating sketch subjects as well.
