1. Parking
Big Tree Park is a small forest of ancient trees located in the larger Spring Hammock Preserve. The park is open to the public from 8 am until dusk and has restrooms, picnic tables and a short boardwalk.
The trailhead is a great place to stop for a break on the Cross Seminole Trail. The trail is part of the Florida National Scenic Trail and a great day hike or bike ride.
It’s a great place to visit with the family and you can walk through the cypress woods on the boardwalk and view a 2,000 year old Bald Cypress tree called Lady Liberty. The park also has the remains of a 3500 year old bald cypress tree named The Senator which was burned down in 2012.
A memorial was created and includes interpretive signage along the newly renovated boardwalk, playground pieces that mimic a bald cypress stump and a clone of “The Senator” called The Phoenix.
2. Restrooms
A quick jaunt down General Hutchison Parkway and you’ll find this tiny (but mighty) 0.3 miles long oasis complete with a short boardwalk, several picnic tables, and a couple of restrooms to boot. The park has also gotten a good amount of press in recent years for it’s tree-hugging ways and the fact that it is situated along a laudable urban bicycle trail, the Cross Seminole Trail. The cross-country route runs from Oviedo to Winter Springs and is a must-do for any urban cyclist. Among the best places to start is Big Tree Park, the home of the Florida Trail and the aforementioned Cross Seminole Trail mc. The park is open from 8 am to dusk and has a large variety of trees in all sizes. It is well worth a visit to this small, yet growing, urban oasis. 3. Picnicking
Big Tree Park Cross Seminole Trailhead General Hutchison Pkwy Longwood Flor serves as a popular trailhead and rest stop for hikers, cyclists, and families. Picnickers can sit at a picnic table, enjoy restrooms, and play at the playground.
The park is located in a conservation area in the Spring Hammock Preserve and provides access to the Cross Seminole Trail. The park is known for the former sight of “The Senator,” a 3500-year-old National Champion Bald Cypress Tree that was lost to fire in 2012.
A memorial has been set up for the original tree and interpretive signage can be found along the boardwalk. Another ancient bald cypress tree, “Lady Liberty,” still stands in the park and is over 2,000 years old.
4. Playground

It is a trailhead for the Cross Seminole Trail and features a boardwalk to an ancient cypress and older tree ruins that are more than two thousand years old.
This beautiful little park is also home to a memorial for “The Senator”, a National Champion Bald Cypress that was lost in 2012. It is also home to Lady Liberty, an ancient cypress that stood 118 feet tall.
Sadly, this mighty tree was a victim of arson and was destroyed in 2012. Since then a variety of artworks have been created using the remnants of this once-mighty tree.
The ashes of the once-mighty tree were donated to 18 different organizations, including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington and the Florida Museum of Natural History. The park itself was renamed to honor this historical cypress, and a clone of it has been planted near the playground. Click for more.
