Land
Located just north of the Capitol, this renowned museum is an ideal stop for anyone interested in learning about Texas culture. From the reproduction skeleton of a French explorer to Stephen F. Austin’s gun and Babe Zaharias’ golf putter, it features a wide array of interesting artifacts that help visitors understand more about the people and history of our state.
The Museum tells the story of Texas through three floors of interactive exhibits themed around land, identity, and opportunity. The first floor, titled Encounters on the Land, explores man’s interaction with the region’s diverse landscapes. It also showcases the 17th-century French shipwreck, La Belle, which sank in Matagorda Bay during explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle’s ill-fated expedition.
In addition to the exhibit galleries, the Museum is home to a dazzling IMAX theatre and a Texas Spirit Theater, where audiences are transported into another time and place through seat-shaking special effects. Visitors can also pick up a souvenir in the Museum Store or enjoy a bite to eat at The Star Cafe.
